How Web Sites Work:

In order to learn how Web sites work, you have to understand a few simple terms:

• HTML
• Web server
• Web site
• Search engines
• Putting it all together

Web page - A Web page is a simple text file that contains not only text, but also a set of instructions that tell your browser how to format and display the page. These instructions tell the browser to do things like change the font size or color, or arrange things in columns. The Web browser interprets these instructions and decides how to format the page onto the screen. If you can read this then you are currently viewing a Web page in your browser.

HTML - HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. A "markup language" is a computer language that describes how a page should be formatted. This is the language that the instructions described above are written in.

Web server - A Web server is a computer running a piece of computer software that can respond to a browser's request for a page, and deliver the page to the web browser through the Internet. Web sites reside on Web servers and can be displayed to and viewed by anyone all over the world. The company that owns the Web server is called your Host, and your monthly payment is usually called your Hosting charge. Every day, there are millions of Web servers delivering Web pages to the browsers through the Internet.

Web site - A set of interconnected Web pages, usually including a homepage, located on the same Web server, and prepared and maintained by a person, group, or organization.

Search engines - Search engines read a Web page and index all of the words from the page. Users of the search engines can find your page by searching for keywords. In order for Search engines to index your Web site, you have to register it with the Search engine. Some popular Search engines are - Yahoo, Google, Lycos, Infoseek, Alta Vista.
